AI Travel Agent Books Hotels via Crypto in One Chat
Published on June 8, 2026
Singapore-based travel booking platform Travala has launched what it calls the world's first agentic AI travel protocol, enabling AI assistants to search hotel inventory, reserve rooms, and initiate cryptocurrency payments in a single chat thread. The Travel MCP, released on June 5, is live through Claude Desktop and open to developers who want to build custom travel agents on top of it.
How the Travel MCP Works
The system relies on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard that connects AI applications to external tools and data services. Payments flow through Coinbase's x402 protocol, which Travala says supports gasless USDC transactions with near-instant settlement at a cost of approximately $0.01 per booking. ERC-7715 session keys allow the AI agent to request a payment while the traveler retains final signing authority inside their own wallet.
Importantly, the protocol does not execute payments autonomously. A traveler must manually approve each transaction before funds move. That requirement keeps the system a step below full autonomy but places it well beyond chatbots that only generate itinerary suggestions without taking any booking action. Travala CEO Juan Otero framed the manual approval step as a transitional feature rather than a permanent limitation. "The launch of the world's first agentic AI travel protocol marks the death of the checkout button," Otero said.
2.2 Million Hotel Listings and Future Plans
The protocol draws on a catalog of more than 2.2 million hotel listings, including properties from Marriott, Hilton, and IHG, sourced through Travala's aggregator partners. Context persists across searches, bookings, and cancellations within the same conversation. Travala has not disclosed a firm date for expanding the protocol to flights and other travel categories, though the company confirmed those expansions are planned. Its Travala loyalty token (AVA) is expected to integrate with the Travel MCP as well.
Market Context and Competitive Landscape
The launch comes amid a broader push to integrate AI agents with blockchain-based payments. While other platforms have experimented with AI-powered travel suggestions, Travala's approach is distinct because it actually executes the booking and payment cycle, albeit with manual approval. The use of Base, Coinbase's Ethereum Layer 2 network, ensures low fees and fast settlement, making microtransactions practical. The gasless USDC transactions eliminate a key friction point for users unfamiliar with crypto gas fees.
Broader Industry Implications
This development signals a convergence of AI and crypto that could reshape the travel industry. By allowing AI agents to handle the entire booking process, Travala reduces the time and effort required for travelers. The open nature of the MCP standard means third-party developers can create specialized travel agents for niche markets, potentially leading to a wave of AI-driven travel services. However, the manual approval requirement highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing autonomy with user control in agentic systems.
Key Takeaways

- Payments use Coinbase's x402 protocol for gasless, near-instant settlement costing ~$0.01 per booking.
- Travelers must manually approve each payment, keeping the system semi-autonomous.
- The protocol accesses over 2.2 million hotel listings from major chains like Marriott, Hilton, and IHG.
- Future expansions to flights and integration with Travala's AVA token are planned.
