Hantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship: French Passengers Evacuated

Hantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship: French Passengers Evacuated

On Sunday, groups of passengers and crew disembarked from a cruise ship hit by a deadly hantavirus outbreak, with government planes evacuating Spanish and French nationals to their home countries. According to a report from CNBC, the ship arrived in Tenerife, Spain, and passengers were transported to hospitals or quarantine facilities upon arrival.

French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu confirmed on X that one of the five French passengers showed symptoms during the repatriation flight to Paris. The passengers will isolate according to national protocols to prevent further spread of the disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended a 42-day quarantine for all passengers from the boat, as stated by Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO's director of epidemic and pandemic management.

Spanish passengers are being kept in hospital for the full 42 days, while other nationals from Canada, the Netherlands, Turkey, the UK, Ireland, and the United States are scheduled to depart on flights through Monday. All passengers will be tested upon arrival and then either taken to local hospitals, quarantine facilities, or transported home for isolation.

This outbreak highlights the risks of infectious diseases spreading in confined environments like cruise ships. The coordinated international response aims to contain the hantavirus, which can cause severe respiratory illness. The situation remains under close monitoring by health authorities.

Key Takeaways

  1. International Evacuation: French and Spanish passengers were evacuated from a cruise ship in Tenerife after a hantavirus outbreak, with one French passenger showing symptoms during the flight.
  2. WHO Quarantine Recommendation: The WHO advises a 42-day quarantine for all passengers, with Spanish passengers remaining in hospital for the entire period.
  3. Coordinated Response: Multiple countries are involved in repatriating their citizens, with testing and quarantine protocols in place to prevent further spread.
