The Nifty 50 is a benchmark Indian stock market index representing the weighted average of 50 of the largest Indian companies listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). It is used for portfolio performance benchmarking, index funds, and ETFs.
Description: The Nifty 50 index was launched on April 21, 1996, by the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE). It covers 13 sectors of the Indian economy and offers investment managers exposure to the Indian equity market in one portfolio. The index is calculated using the free-float market capitalization weighted method. It is the most widely used benchmark for Indian equity funds and is also the underlying for derivatives trading. The Nifty 50 is maintained by NSE Indices Limited, a subsidiary of NSE. As of 2023, it has a total market capitalization of over $2 trillion.
