The NIFTY 50 is a benchmark Indian stock market index representing the weighted average of 50 of the largest Indian companies listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). It is used for portfolio performance measurement, index funds, and derivatives trading.
Description: Launched in 1996 by the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE), the NIFTY 50 is the flagship index of the NSE. It covers 50 companies across 13 sectors, accounting for approximately 65% of the free-float market capitalization of all stocks listed on the NSE. The index is calculated using a free-float market capitalization weighted methodology. It serves as a barometer for the Indian equity market and is widely tracked by domestic and international investors. The NIFTY 50 is also the underlying for index futures and options traded on the NSE, as well as for exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and index funds.
