Costco Q3 Earnings: Membership Renewal Holds Key Amid Record Gas Sales

Published on May 29, 2026

Costco Wholesale (NASDAQ: COST) delivered a fiscal third-quarter earnings report on Thursday that, while not spectacular, reinforced the warehouse giant's resilience in a challenging economic environment. Total revenue rose 11.6% year over year to $70.53 billion, topping Wall Street expectations of $69.81 billion, according to LSEG. Adjusted earnings per share of $4.93 grew 15.2% and came in line with analyst forecasts.

Membership: The Metric That Matters

As expected, membership metrics took center stage. Membership fee income climbed 10.7% to $1.37 billion, slightly above the $1.36 billion FactSet consensus. However, total paid members came in at 82.9 million, just shy of expectations but still up 4.1% annually. The more telling figure was the U.S./Canada membership renewal rate, which ticked higher—a sign that existing members remain loyal despite inflationary pressures.

Stability in renewal rates is crucial for Costco's business model, as recurring fee income provides a predictable revenue stream and funds the low-margin retail operations. The company's ability to maintain and even improve renewal rates during a period of high inflation underscores the enduring appeal of its value proposition.

Record Gas Sales Drive Top-Line Growth

CEO Ron Vachris highlighted record gasoline sales during the quarter, noting that all three four-week fiscal periods set successive all-time volume records. The final five weeks of the quarter became the company's top five volume weeks ever. Surging demand came as gas prices hovered near four-year highs, exacerbated by supply disruptions related to the Iran conflict.

“All three, four-week fiscal periods of the quarter set successive all-time company volume sales records, with the final five weeks of the quarter becoming our top five volume weeks ever,” Vachris said on the post-earnings call. The gas pump traffic also drove incremental store visits, boosting sales of higher-margin items.

Traffic vs. Ticket: A Shift in Consumer Behavior

While traffic growth decelerated sequentially, comparable ticket size growth accelerated. This suggests that consumers, while not visiting more frequently, are spending more per trip as they consolidate their shopping at Costco to take advantage of bulk pricing. The trend aligns with the broader retail environment where shoppers seek value amid high inflation.

Costco's value-focused ethos has become a powerful magnet. “The high inflation of recent years has made the company's value-focused ethos really shine,” noted analysts. The company's 928 locations worldwide—primarily in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, with growing presence in Europe, Asia, and Australia—continue to benefit from this dynamic.

International Expansion: Executive Tier in China

Costco launched its executive membership tier in China during the quarter, and management reported strong early adoption. This move is part of a broader strategy to deepen engagement in one of the world's largest consumer markets. The executive tier offers additional rewards and perks, typically leading to higher spending per member.

Stock Reaction and Outlook

Costco shares were little changed in after-hours trading, reflecting the mixed nature of the report. The stock had fallen roughly 9% from its 52-week high of $1,096 on May 19, partly due to broader market rotation and profit-taking. Analysts are maintaining a cautious stance; the consensus price target remains near $1,100, with a hold-equivalent rating.

Looking ahead, Costco's ability to sustain membership growth and renewal rates will be pivotal. The company faces competition from BJ's Wholesale, Walmart, and Amazon, but its unique membership model and scale provide a durable competitive moat. With consumers increasingly focused on value, Costco is well-positioned to weather economic headwinds.

  1. Costco Q3 revenue of $70.53B beat estimates, EPS of $4.93 in line.
  2. Membership fee income grew 10.7% to $1.37B; renewal rates ticked higher.
  3. Record gas sales driven by geopolitical supply disruptions boosted traffic.
  4. Executive tier launched in China with strong early adoption.
  5. Stock down ~9% from 52-week high; analysts maintain hold with $1,100 target.
