Hyperliquid's Pre-IPO Perpetuals: Retail's Gateway to Nasdaq Gains
Published on May 18, 2026
Retail investors have long been shut out of the most lucrative phase of a company's public debut: the pre-IPO build-up. By the time shares hit Nasdaq, much of the upside has already been captured by institutional investors and early backers. But a new wave of on-chain perpetual futures markets is flipping that script, and Hyperliquid's HYPE token is riding the wave.
Hyperliquid's HIP-3 framework, which allows third-party teams to launch perpetual futures markets, has processed over $120 billion in total volume since its inception, according to Dune Analytics. On April 8 alone, HIP-3 deployers accounted for 48.1% of Hyperliquid's entire platform volume. The largest deployer, TradeXYZ, demonstrated the model's accuracy by pricing Cerebras perpetuals within 3% of the AI chipmaker's Nasdaq debut, while traditional secondary platforms were off by 35% at the same time.
This precision is drawing retail attention. Diego Martin, CEO of Yellow Capital, told Decrypt that retail investors have historically entered once companies go public, when "much of the upside had already played out." He called on-chain pre-IPO access "the beginning of a much bigger shift in who gets to participate." The numbers back him up: HYPE has gained 69% over the 12 months ending May 18, outperforming both Bitcoin and Ether by a wide margin.
Upcoming listings are fueling the hype. SpaceX is targeting a June 2026 IPO that could raise $75-80 billion at a valuation of up to $2 trillion, according to Reuters. Anthropic and OpenAI are each targeting listings that could raise $60 billion at valuations exceeding $1 trillion. TradeXYZ already lists a SpaceX pre-IPO perpetual contract (SPCX) at a $150 reference price, implying a valuation of roughly $1.78 trillion, with the contract trading at $207 on May 18.
Meanwhile, traditional Bitcoin treasury firms are taking a more defensive stance amid a 39% drawdown from Bitcoin's all-time high. Nasdaq-listed Nakamoto announced an actively managed Bitcoin derivatives program on April 24 to generate income from volatility and hedge downside risk. In contrast, Hyperliquid's model is offensive—it captures upside before the bell rings.
The contrast highlights a broader shift: while some legacy players hedge, decentralized platforms are creating new avenues for retail to participate in pre-IPO price discovery. The accuracy of TradeXYZ's Cerebras pricing suggests that on-chain markets can rival or even outperform traditional secondary platforms in efficiency. If this trend continues, pre-IPO perpetuals could become a standard tool for retail investors seeking early exposure to high-growth tech names.
